9 Oct 2007 On the home stretch!!! Had a fantastic afternoon yesterday
and last night. Boat speed around 7 knots all night long and this
morning winds started veering more east. Boat speed kept creeping up
with
an actual increase in comfort level. At 10:00 AM we are holding at 9
knots boat speed! This is a speed we have only seen in spurts over
the
last 12 years that we've owned the boat. Position 18 deg 46'N, 156
deg 44'W course 322 deg true. Seas have come down to 1 meter as we
slide to the lee (west side) of the Big Island. South Point is 60 miles due
east of us now. As we go further NW we will most likely find a further
drop in wind speed until we clear the dead spot on this side of the
island. We will definitely arrive tomorrow (WED) around mid day! The
stoke factor is way up and morale aboard Grace is running very high with the
end in sight. We have 160 miles to go and the last 24 hrs. is in
contention for the best day ever. Should be almost 180 miles! Kelly
is reading
"Such a Long Journey" by Rohinton Mistry. I've read all his books and
love his style. He's from India and lives in Canada. When I saw the
title it reminds me of what a long journey this has been. Wouldn't trade it for anything, but glad it's almost over. For those of you
who follow our track on the yotreps site (pronounced yacht reps) you'll
notice the nice curve in our course for this passage. It has allowed us to
get our easting in early with the counter current, and now we've bent
back to the NW for the finish with the NE trades. Now it's time for "Hats Off"
to Larry Chang, our buddy in Kona for posting all these logs you've
been reading. Since we have no connection to the internet out here, I
write the logs and email them by ham radio to Larry and he posts them.
He has also been very helpful in receiving packages, sending mail,
dealing with taxes, handling our storage facility and everything
needing to
be handled on the home front. Mahalo nui brah! Many Caws! R |
